SAILING IN THE EYE OF THE STORM | 28 HOURS ROUGH SAILING | SV VELA NAUTICA

Finally! Vela Nautica is back from her refit and in top condition for the next sailing season.

When we left our anchorage at Isla Culatra, close to Faro / Portugal, we knew there is a cold front passing by.
This atlantic cold front was supposed to spend us the wind to sail to Gibraltar.
As we found out, on our passage, the front did not know about the weather forecast and send us much more wind than we expected.
For our first longer sail in this season, than forecasted.
This storm force 8 wind plus tidal streams and a rise of the continental shelf from 700 m depth to 50 m in the bay of Cadiz
made sailing quite uncomfortably over night.
Additional we got some ship traffic that kept us busy shifting sails and keeping watch.

The next morning gave us calm conditions and rewarded with a clear sky and sunshine with some cumulus when we entered the strait of Gibraltar.

In the end the anchor dropped under Gibraltar Rock and the crew was happy, hungry and exhausted.
